The City of Toronto projected that the World Cup could attract more than 300,000 out-of-town visitors and generate approximately $393 million in GDP for the city. Early spending data, however, suggests the immediate economic impact was more measured than some may have expected.According to Moneris data reported by Global News, hotel spending in Toronto increased 18% year-over-year during the first two weeks of the tournament. Spending at restaurants and bars rose 3%, grocery stores saw a 6% increase and apparel spending declined 5%. For comparison, Toronto experienced a much sharper spending surge during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in 2024. At first glance, the numbers may appear underwhelming for one of the world's largest sporting events. But the comparison also highlights an important point: not every major event creates the same spending patterns.Toronto hosted six World Cup matches at Toronto Stadium, the smallest venue used for the 2026 tournament, with a capacity of 43,036. Spending by international visitors at Toronto restaurants and bars increased by as much as 34%, while grocery spending rose 19%. Travel data also suggests Canada performed well in attracting international fans. According to travel eSIM provider Airalo, travel to Canada from France increased 43.6% in June compared with the previous year, while travel from Germany rose 23.8%. Croatian travel to Canada increased 363.5% ahead of the Portugal-Croatia match in Toronto.These numbers matter because the economic value of hosting a global event is not necessarily captured in a few weeks of restaurant or retail receipts.&nbsp;For Toronto, the longer-term opportunity is international visibility. Across downtown Toronto, the international presence was hard to miss. In pubs, cafes and public venues, German, French, Croatian and many other different languages and accents could be heard everywhere. Visiting fans from Africa, Europe, and the Americas rode TTC, families enjoyed meals at local restaurants and, for a few weeks, Toronto genuinely felt like a meeting place for the world.Destination Toronto surveyed international visitors at Toronto Stadium and the FIFA Fan Festival and found that nine in 10 respondents said they would return to Toronto within the next two years. That may prove to be one of the more significant outcomes of the tournament.Major sporting events introduce cities to global audiences on an enormous scale. Visitors experience neighbourhoods, transportation systems, hotels, restaurants and public spaces firsthand. Their impressions can influence future tourism, business travel and how a city is perceived internationally.Toronto also received an endorsement from the football world itself. Following Portugal's match against Croatia, head coach Roberto Martínez praised the city's stadium and host experience and expressed disappointment that Toronto would not host more games.For a city competing globally for visitors, talent, business and investment, that kind of recognition has value.The final economic results of Toronto's World Cup experience will take time to assess. Early spending data covers only part of the tournament period, and the broader tourism impact cannot yet be measured through short-term transaction data alone.What is already clear is that Toronto attracted international visitors from several major markets and left a strong impression on many of them.The World Cup may not have produced a spending explosion in every sector. Its more lasting contribution could be something harder to measure immediately: introducing Toronto to new visitors and giving them a reason to come back. For a global city like Toronto, the value of hosting the world may continue long after the final whistle.
