This week on our tour around the Greater Toronto Area, let’s focus on another important area - City of Brampton.&nbsp;Brampton boasts about their status as a business hub, with more than 100,000 businesses and the major sectors are manufacturing, transportation/ logistics, retail, and wholesale. According to Brampton’s website, Forbes recognized the City as “one of Canada’s Best Employers for the fifth year in a row.”&nbsp;The City of Brampton is also known as the Flower City. They say they have over 400 roadside gardens. The most popular park is Gage Park and the City of Brampton claims it is the city’s oldest city park. As we will talk about shortly, this is a major venue for many of the city’s many events and celebrations throughout the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Brampton also has their Arts Walk of Fame, “one of the City’s key recognition programs” that celebrates and recognizes talent that came from Brampton. Some very iconic artists inducted into the Arts Walk of Fame include Rupi Kaur, Michael Cera, Russell Peters, Alan Thicke, and many more.&nbsp;&nbsp;Various events in the city include Tamil, Irish, Portuguese, Italian, and Latino history month celebrations, Pride celebrations, Winter Lights Festival, Canada Day celebrations, Emancipation Day celebrations, Hockey Night in Brampton, the Pumpkin Party, and more, most of which take place in the city’s Gage Park.&nbsp;We can then look into some demographics of the city according to Statistics Canada’s 2021 Census. With Brampton’s population spiking more than 10.6 per cent in 2021 alone, the city is seeing “explosive growth” compared to similar municipalities, particularly Mississauga which had a 1 per cent decrease in population over the same period.&nbsp;&nbsp;This population change represents a larger percentage increase than neighboring cities like Toronto and Peel, but also all of Ontario and even Canada as a whole. To compare, while Brampton rose 10.6% in population, Toronto rose 4.6%, Peel 5%, Ontario 5.8%, and Canada 5.2%.&nbsp;&nbsp;In fact, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insauga.com/brampton-will-outpace-ottawa-to-become-ontarios-2nd-largest-city-premier-says/">InSauga News</a>, Brampton is on track to become Ontario’s second-largest city and is making significant progress on meeting provincial housing targets, leading to a $25.5 million funding boost.&nbsp;So, what about housing of these people? Premier Ford announced the $25.5 million in infrastructure funding as a reward to Brampton for hitting more than 80 per cent of its provincially set housing targets last year, breaking ground on some 7,028 housing units in 2023. Ontario’s More Homes Built Faster Act wants to see municipalities add 1.5 million homes across the province over the next 10 years, with Brampton’s target set at 113,000 new units. While Brampton didn’t quite meet its full 2023 target, the $25.5 million in funds will spur the city’s progress.&nbsp;Let’s look at the actual numbers. There was an 8.6% increase in the total of private dwellings in the city from the previous 2016 census. Statistics Canada reports that as of 2021, single-detached houses made up 52.6% of all the private dwellings in the city. This proportion of single-family detached homes is higher than Toronto and Peel. Other popular housing types are the semi-detached house at 13.6%, townhouses at 12.6%, and apartments in a duplex at 6.6%.&nbsp;Most of the city consists of single-family households; specifically, couples with children. This group makes up 36.8% of the city’s households. In these cases, they do not house additional people such as extended family members or renters. This said, there is a sizeable chunk of multigenerational households, with this type of household making up 14.3% of the total private households in Brampton. One-person households are also a decent proportion of the city’s households, with this household style representing 12.1%.&nbsp;&nbsp;We can now look at the city’s housing market report, according to WOWA. They report that the average home sold price in Brampton has decreased 9.8% from last year, now resting at $1,002,608. Each property type in Brampton decreased in price from the year before. The average detached price also decreased, now resting at $1.17 million, down 11.1% from the previous year. Semi-detached homes decreased 9.5% with a price of $928,000. Condos decreased by 6.6% from the year before, with a price now at $532,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;Overall, it seems that the housing market in Brampton is continuing to cool down this year, hopefully making way for more families to sneak into the housing market in this part of the GTA.&nbsp;&nbsp;
